Geração

Short Documentary by João Pamplona Mendes, opens in a new tab

This short documentary explores the origins of the album, its evolution, and its role in closing a chapter in my life as a composer.

Music Video by João Pamplona Mendes, opens in a new tab. Capturing a live performance at A Claraboia

Eleven pieces, born from six years of piano compositions, reflecting the fusion of tradition and innovation that defines André’s work as a composer. This work encapsulates his musical and personal evolution. Some of the pieces reveal a classical character, the result of a time when music was guided solely by intuition and memorization. Others are more exploratory and contemporary, emerging after his introduction to musical notation under the guidance of composer and mentor Fernando C. Lapa, opens in a new tab.

Throughout the album, one can feel the balance between traditional structure and a more open, almost spontaneous, approach to musical creation. Geração represents the meeting point between past and present, between the simplicity of early compositions and the complexity of contemporary composition techniques. Each piece tells a story that is both intimate and universal, a dialogue between what has been and what is yet to come.

The cover of this album was made by my son when he was three years old. The abstract result, of so much and so little, extracted from a chaotic experimental color process, brings together everything that the record is in essence and that's why I thought it was perfect.

Creative process

The compositions are centered around a core of piano pieces. They illustrate stories and characters in fragmented chapters. Predominantly marked by slow movements, reality and fiction are presented to the listener with equal clarity. Having considerable experience in animated cinema, the author created this album independently, exploring a completely free field without the need for any visual counterpoint. Drawing from his musical background, though unaware of it at the time, the author composed the pieces in a predominantly tonal register. Later, as he became more professional, and with the guidance of his mentor Fernando Lapa, opens in a new tab, he realized that the work largely fits within the typical context of the Classical period in music history.
